What Should English Conversation Beginners Study First? A Simple 3-Month Plan

“I want to start learning English, but I don't know where to begin.”

As an English teacher, I often hear this from people who are just starting their English-learning journey.

Today, there are countless textbooks, apps, videos, and online resources available. While having many options is great, it can also make it difficult to know where to focus.

In this article, I'd like to share a simple three-month study plan for English conversation beginners.

A Common Mistake Many Beginners Make

One important thing to understand is that trying to speak English right away is not always the fastest path to improvement.

Of course, speaking practice is important. However, if you do not have a solid foundation, it can be difficult to express yourself confidently.

For example, you may struggle because:

  • You don't know enough vocabulary.
  • Your basic grammar is unclear.
  • You are not familiar with English sounds.

In these situations, it can be hard to know what to say during a conversation.

Just as athletes need basic training before playing a sport well, English learners need a strong foundation before becoming confident speakers.

Building a strong foundation first often leads to faster and more sustainable improvement in English conversation.

Month 1: Review Basic English Grammar

For beginners, I recommend starting with basic grammar, especially the grammar typically taught in junior high school.

Some important topics include:

  • Be verbs
  • Action verbs
  • Present tense
  • Past tense
  • Future expressions
  • Questions
  • Modal verbs

There is no need to study advanced grammar at this stage.

Instead, focus on understanding and creating simple sentences such as:

  • I work in Tokyo.
  • I worked yesterday.
  • I will study English tomorrow.

When you can build basic sentences on your own, you have taken a big step toward effective communication.

Month 2: Build Your Vocabulary

Vocabulary is just as important as grammar.

If you don't know the words, you won't be able to express your ideas.

The good news is that you don't need to memorize difficult words right away.

Start with common words that are used in everyday conversations, such as:

  • work
  • study
  • family
  • friend
  • travel
  • enjoy
  • learn
  • practice

If you learn just ten words a day, you can add around 300 new words in a month.

The key is not only to memorize words but also to use them.

Try making simple sentences with the words you learn. This will help you remember them and use them more naturally.

Month 3: Listen and Speak

Once you have built a basic foundation in grammar and vocabulary, spend more time listening to English and speaking out loud.

A simple and effective routine is:

  • Listen to English audio.
  • Repeat what you hear.
  • Read the sentences aloud several times.

Knowing English is different from using English.

By moving your mouth and practicing regularly, speaking English will gradually become easier and more natural.

You do not need long study sessions.

Even five to ten minutes a day can make a difference if you practice consistently.

The Most Important Thing: Keep Going

The secret to improving your English conversation skills is consistency.

There is no magic shortcut that will make you fluent overnight.

However, if you continue working on:

  • Basic grammar
  • Essential vocabulary
  • Listening
  • Reading aloud

your English ability will steadily improve over time.

Many English learners become discouraged because they expect immediate results. In reality, language learning is a gradual process.

Small daily efforts often produce the biggest long-term improvements.

How English Plus Supports English Learners

At English Plus, located in the Tamachi and Shibaura area of Minato City, Tokyo, we have helped many learners build strong English foundations through practical lessons and consistent study habits.

Rather than focusing only on conversation practice, we encourage students to strengthen their grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills in a balanced way.

Whether you are a complete beginner or returning to English after many years, developing solid basic English skills can make a significant difference in your progress.
