In today's blog, I'd like to introduce "3 tips to finisht the TOEIC L&R Test on time."
3 Tips to Finish the TOEIC L&R Test on Time(Reading Section)
Many people who take the TOEIC test share the same concern.
“I always run out of time in the reading section.”
Especially in Part 7 (Reading Comprehension), many test takers experience problems such as:
・Not being able to finish the test
・Randomly filling in the last 5–10 answers
・Making mistakes because of rushing
In fact, according to official information from ETS (Educational Testing Service), many TOEIC test takers report that they struggle with time management in the reading section.
So today, let’s look at some simple and effective tips to help you finish the TOEIC reading section within the time limit.
TOEIC Reading Section Structure
First, let's check the structure of the TOEIC reading section.
Part 5:30 questions
Part 6:16 questions
Part 7:54 questions
The total time for the reading section is 75 minutes.
Many test takers run out of time during Part 7.
Tip 1: Decide Your Time Allocation
Setting a clear time plan helps reduce stress during the test.
Recommended time allocation
Part 5:10 minutes
Part 6:10 minutes
Part 7:55 minutes
In other words,
You should aim to finish Part 5 and Part 6 within 20 minutes.
This leaves enough time to carefully read the passages in Part 7.
Tip 2: Skip Difficult Questions
The TOEIC test is not a test where you should spend too much time on a single question.
A useful rule is:
If you cannot answer within about 10 seconds, skip the question.
The reason is simple.
Sometimes questions later in the test are easier, and spending too much time on one difficult question may cause you to lose valuable time.
You can always come back to skipped questions later if time remains.
Tip 3: Pay Attention to Paraphrasing
In TOEIC reading passages, the same words rarely appear in both the text and the question.
Instead, paraphrasing (different expressions with the same meaning) is commonly used.
Examples:
increase → go up
buy → purchase
help → assist
When you become familiar with paraphrasing, you can find the correct answers much faster.
Summary: Three Key Strategies for TOEIC Reading
Let’s review the three important points:
✔ Decide your time allocation
✔ Skip difficult questions
✔ Pay attention to paraphrasing
The TOEIC test is not only about English ability.
Test strategy is also very important.
Some learners improve their reading score by more than 100 points simply by changing the way they approach the test.
Practice these strategies little by little, and try them in your next TOEIC test.
Good luck with your TOEIC preparation!
