Today, I'd like to write about "Quick Tips for Solving TOEIC Vocabulary & Grammar Questions (Parts 5/6)!
In TOEIC Part 5 and Part 6, your ability to quickly identify the part of speech of a word plays a crucial role in your score.
One of the most powerful tools for doing this is understanding suffixes.
When you recognize common suffixes, you can instantly guess:
• the part of speech
• the approximate meaning of the word
Official TOEIC preparation materials and popular vocabulary books (such as the TOEIC L&R vocabulary series) consistently emphasize the importance of word formation.
By learning common suffixes, you can analyze unfamiliar vocabulary much more efficiently during the test.
Instead of memorizing isolated words, you begin to understand how words are systematically connected.
Today, let's learn five essential suffixes that form nouns frequently seen in TOEIC questions.
Suffixes that Form Nouns (5)
-tion / -sion
Examples: information, decision, communication
→ These suffixes turn verbs into nouns.
→ This is one of the most frequent and important patterns in TOEIC vocabulary questions.
-ment
Examples: development, improvement, agreement
→ These nouns often express actions, processes, or results.
-er / -or
Examples: manager, employer, operator
→ These suffixes indicate people, roles, or occupations.
-ness
Examples: happiness, effectiveness, readiness
→ These nouns express states or qualities.
-ity
Examples: responsibility, possibility, quality
→ These suffixes form abstract nouns that describe concepts or conditions.
Evidence-Based Learning Effect
Research on vocabulary acquisition shows that learners who understand word formation patterns:
• guess the meanings of unfamiliar words more accurately
• achieve significantly higher accuracy in grammar questions
In the TOEIC test, the ability to instantly recognize transformations such as:
Verb → Noun → Adjective
has a direct impact on your score.
When suffixes are organized systematically, vocabulary learning shifts from isolated memorization to a connected network of word knowledge.
This approach greatly improves:
• learning efficiency
• long-term retention
• accuracy in TOEIC grammar questions
So, instead of memorizing words randomly, start learning word formation patterns little by little.
