Today, I'd like to write about how to answer "How are you?" in natural ways.
When we start learning English, we’re usually taught - “How are you?” → “I’m fine, thank you. And you?”
It’s polite and correct but in real English conversation, native speakers rarely say this.
Why not?
Because “I’m fine” sounds too formal, distant, or even unnatural in everyday situations.
So what do native speakers actually say instead?
Let’s look at 5 natural, friendly, and modern ways to respond to “How are you?” that you can start using right away. (Tomorrow, I'd like to introduce other 5 expressions in this
blog.)
1. I’m good.
Meaning: “I’m well” / “I’m doing fine.”
The most common and natural response — casual but polite.
💡Example:
A: How are you?
B: I’m good, thanks! How about you?
2. Pretty good.
Meaning: “Not bad” / “I’m doing well.”
A relaxed, modest way to answer — great for everyday conversations.
💡Example: Pretty good. Just busy these days.
3. I’m great!
Meaning: “I’m doing really well!” / “I feel awesome!”
A cheerful, positive response that adds energy to your conversation.
💡Example: I’m great, thanks for asking!
4. Not bad.
Meaning: “Not bad” / “Pretty good.”
A mild and friendly answer that sounds perfectly natural.
💡Example: Not bad. How about you?
5. Can’t complain.
Meaning: “No complaints.” / “Things are okay.”
A very common native expression that shows you’re doing fine without bragging.
💡Example: Can’t complain. Everything’s going well.
Summary: From “I’m fine” to Real English
“I’m fine” isn’t wrong - it’s just too textbook.
In natural English, people use a variety of phrases to sound more relaxed, authentic, and human.
Try mixing in responses like “I’m good,” “Not bad,” or “Can’t complain.”
Even this small change will make your English sound more confident and natural.
So next time someone asks, “How are you?”, surprise them with a real, native-style answer!
