Today, I would like to introduce some useful English words and expressions which can be used in English Plus lessons too.
In our English lessons, our students sometimes talk about food and its texture.
Being able to express the “texture” of food in English will greatly enrich your dining experiences when traveling abroad or speaking English.
In Japanese, textures can be described intuitively with words such as “saku saku” (crunchy) and “mochi mochi” (chewy), but there are actually many ways to express texture in English as
well.
In this article, we will introduce some commonly used English words for texture and example sentences.
1. flaky ＝ サクサク・フレーク状
The pie crust is light and flaky. （このパイの皮、軽くてサクサクしてる。）
2. grainy ＝ ざらざら・つぶつぶ感
The sauce is a little grainy because of the nuts. （ナッツが入っているから、このソースはちょっとざらざらしている。）
3. smooth ＝ なめらか・スムーズ
This pudding is so creamy and smooth. （このプリン、クリーミーでなめらかだ。）
4. moist ＝ しっとり
The cake is rich and moist. （このケーキ、濃厚でしっとりしている。）
5. dry ＝ ぱさぱさ
The bread has gone dry. （パンがぱさぱさになってしまった。）
Being able to describe texture in English allows you to convey your impressions of food and meals more specifically.
This will surely come in handy when dining at restaurants while traveling abroad or eating with foreigners.
